Queen Elizabeth has made a surprise visit to see the completed Elizabeth Line at Paddington Station.

Just over two weeks away from her Platinum Jubilee weekend, the Queen and Prince Edward attended the official visit ahead of the opening.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: “In a happy development, Her Majesty The Queen is attending today’s event to mark the completion of the Elizabeth line.

“Her Majesty was aware of the engagement and the organisers were informed of the possibility she may attend.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed the Queen and Earl of Wessex along with Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan and Transport for London commissioner, Andy Byford.

They met the staff involved with the project which was formerly known as Crossrail, along with train drivers, station staff and apprentices who will run the railway.

The Queen unveiled a plaque, officially opening the Elizabeth line, named in her honour.

Boris Johnson said: “We’re all incredibly touched and moved and grateful to Her Majesty for coming to open the Elizabeth line today.”

Completion of Crossrail was due in December 2018, but was delayed. The total cost of the project is estimated at £18.9bn, including £5.1bn from the government.

Stretching from Reading and Heathrow Airport, to Shenfield and Abbey Wood, the Elizabeth line is expected to boost capacity and cut journey times down drastically.

A full timetable of the route will not be in place until May 2023, but services are said to run every five minutes between 6:30 and 23:00.

Transport for London has announced the project will open on 24th May to the public.
