Woman caught coronavirus twice within 20 days

Spanish researchers have claimed that a 31-year-old healthcare worker experienced the shortest known gap between COVID infections after catching it twice within 20 days.

Tests show that she was infected with Delta in late December, then Omicron in January. Researchers say that this shows you can still be infected again, even if you have had COVID before or are fully vaccinated.

Study author Dr. Gemma Recio said that this particular case highlights that Omicron can “evade the previous immunity acquired either from a natural infection with other variants from vaccines” in a presentation at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

She said: “people who have had Covid-19 cannot assume they are protected against reinfection, even if they have been fully vaccinated.”

Dr Recio said it is important that reinfections in people who were fully vaccinated is monitored, as it would help the search for variants which evade vaccines.
