Johnny Depp testifies in defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard

Johnny Depp testified in his $50m (£38.2m) defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard on Tuesday.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are suing each other over defamation allegations, in which Heard has sued back with a $100m counterclaim. The trial is supposed to sort out all the lawsuits.

The lawsuit is in relation to Heard calling herself a victim of domestic violence in an opinion piece she wrote for the Washington Post. Depp wasn’t named in the piece but his lawyers say it clearly suggests he is the alleged abuser. Depp denies any abuse.

“Never did I myself reach the point of striking Ms. Heard in any way. Nor have I ever struck any woman in my life,” he said in court.

Depp is suing Heard for reportedly ruining his reputation in which he lost roles in films such as the Fantastic Beasts franchise. He has previously lost a defamation lawsuit against The Sun over the same article, in which the judge at the time said that the paper’s claims were “substantially true.”

“I am obsessed with the truth,” Depp said in court on Tuesday. He added that Heard’s allegations are “not based in any species of truth” and are “heinous”.

Depp’s family members, employees and friends testified that they saw Heard physically attack him numerous times.

Heard is expected to testify before the trial, which has been going for over a week, wraps up.
