Millions of people are left fearing for their futures as Russia launches a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Just before 3am GMT on Thursday, Putin addressed the Russian nation on television, declaring war just as the population was waking up. Moments later, missiles began raining down on Ukraine with the first explosions coming in the early hours, bringing panic and uncertainty.
Putin said: “I have made the decision of a military operation.”
The country’s ability to resist was questioned by many, as the Ukrainian military worked to respond to the scale of the attack.
With Ukraine positioned between Russia to the east, and countries such as Poland and Romania to the west, this means that it straddles both European and Russian areas of influence.
Russia has long resisted Ukraine’s move towards the European Union; a major reason why tensions are so high.
As the day developed, the US, UK and its allies hit back with furious reaction.
US President, Joe Biden said Putin would “bear the consequences” for choosing this war. Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister, said the invasion is a “hideous and barbarous venture”.
Both leaders have now announced new sanctions directed at striking Russia’s economy and the finances of its elites.
It is predicted that globally, prices could rise and the invasion is likely to have major effects on people.
