The Friends cast paid tribute to their co-star James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther, following his death.
James Michael Tyler played the Central Perk manager and Rachel Green’s admirer on the hit 90s sitcom for 10 seasons. After a long battle with prostate cancer, which was first diagnosed in 2018, he died peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday.
After the news of his death, Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel, posted a clip on Instagram from the finale where Gunther admits that he loves her before she moves to Paris. She added the caption: “Friends would not have been the same without you. Thank you for the laughter you brought to the show and to all of our lives. You will be so missed #JamesMichaelTyler.”
The rest of the cast soon followed, with Courtney Cox, who played Monica Geller, posting a photo of him on Instagram with the caption: “The size of gratitude you brought into the room and showed every day on set is the size of the gratitude I hold for having known you. Rest in peace James.”
Matt LeBlanc, Joey Tribbiani actor, shared: “We had a lot of laughs buddy. You will be missed. RIP my friend.”
Phoebe Buffay actor, Lisa Kudrow, wrote on Instagram: “James Michael Tyler, we will miss you” as she thanked him “for being there for us all.”
David Schwimmer, who starred as Ross Geller, thanked Tyler for “playing such a wonderful, unforgettable role” and “for being such a big hearted gentleman and all around mensch off screen” in a tribute on Instagram where he added: “You will be missed, buddy.”
Matthew Perry, known for the comical Chandler Bing, tweeted: “We lost a good friend yesterday in James Michael Tyler. Gunther, you will be missed.”
Marta Kauffman and David Crane, co-creators of Friends, said that Tyler was a “genuinely kind, sweet man.”
Earlier this year, Tyler made a brief virtual appearance on the Friends HBO Max reunion, stating that “it was the most memorable 10 years of [his] life.”
“I could not have imagined just a better experience. All these guys were fantastic. It was just a joy to work with them. I felt very, very special.”
